Poway Council District 2 Heats Up

Two of the three candidates for the D2 City Council represent qualified choices for the seat.  But there is one clear choice.

Jared Wilson

Jared enters the District 2 race as a long term resident and with the strong endorsements of the Deputy Sherriff's Association, the Poway Firefighters, the Republican Party, and pretty much a who’s who in local and regional politics.

He is about as well-rounded and qualified a person as a city council candidate can be, having held positions within Poway on the Budget Review Committee, running the San Diego Police Officers Union, and continuing to advocate for a fiscally focused government process that maintains the safety of the residents and improves their quality of life.  He is a long term Poway family man with deep roots with his kids the local public schools on their journey.

With the continued deterioration of the law and order environment of the surrounding cities, and the bleed through of that criminality into our enclave, it is now more important than ever to ensure that Poway has leadership that is in lock step understanding of what it take to continue to keep the streets safe for all residents.

A last minute entry into the District 2 race, Mrs. Springett comes to the race with a well-established set of economic credentials and experience, but an unclear reason for running.  She has served on a number of private boards and on an HOA board in leadership positions, and she was a member of the Poway Budget Review Committee.  She also vied for the appointment to the District 2 seat when Barry Leonard retired.

Curiously, after choosing to throw her hat into the race, she withdrew from the Republican party, moving to NPP.  It appears to be a play for the Democratic vote, as the local branch has thrown their enthusiastic support behind her.  Those entry fees, however, can be a bit steep to the uninitiated, and it’s reasonable to be concerned of what she needed to trade away.  Was it the use of her budget knowledge to redirect some monies to a social justice cause du jour?  Something else?  Speculation to be fair, but a worthy line of questioning, as the choice will certainly raise some eyebrows.

Despite some potential concern on her motivations and choices, Mrs. Springett represents a quality entry into the D2 race.  However, her lack of meaningful experience in the areas that are most important to the residents, particularly in the area of public safety, and the extraordinarily well-rounded and complete qualifications of her opponent, places her as a strong second choice for D2.

Tony Blain

Mr. Blain is a social media disaster whose online activities appear to involve grandstanding, providing false information, shouting down those who do not support his activities, and interfering with regular city functions.

His lack of follow-through is as legendary as the amount of real world and meaningful political baggage he carries, including evidence-backed allegations of serious campaign finance irregularities.  All of which would be worth exploring were Mr. Blain anything other than a candidate on the lunatic fringe.
